It doesn’t take hurricane-force winds to do damage to shingle roofs. Even winds of 30 to 40 mph are enough to cause shingles to peel or tear loose, especially if the shingles are old or not specifically designed to withstand high winds.

You can imagine how much damage a Category 4 hurricane can do to a roof with winds blowing around 130 to 150 mph.
